Alternative Camp Fourth Group (31st July-7th August)

The fourth group was from Israel. They were children (13-16-year-old) who were LD(Learning Disorder), ADHD(Attentive Defeceit Hiperactive Disorder), ADD(Attention Deficit Disorder) or something like that.

They came from Kfar Qari that is Palestinian area in Israel, so they were Palestinian people. They spoke Arabic and just teachers could speak English. We communicated by only gesture with children. This was really rare and great experience for me.

I felt the power of sports. On the first day, we played soccer with some boys. They changed so much through soccer. They started to speak to us, laugh with us and need us.

What I really regret is that I didn't ask teachers about their lives much. This might be the last chance to talk with Palestinian people.

We meet a number of people in our lives.
We don't know who can be a life time friend.
We need to speak.
We need to spend time together.
We need to open our minds.
Then, we can tell it.

Alternative Camp Third group (24-30th July)

The third group was from Türkiye Sakatlar Derneği in Gaziantep.Gaziantep is a city in southeast of Turkey.

They had fisical disabilities. I learned Turkish folk dans, dialect of Gaziantep and hospitality from them. I talked a lot and made friends with them. I felt that there was no difference between us. We played sports, dansed, made jokes and enjoyed together. Because we enjoyed much as friends, farewell was so hard.

I felt like that I lived great time not as a volunteer but as one of their friends.

On the last day, we held a meeting and talked about the week. I remember these comments.

"I could do something that I could not so far. Because others, even teachers said or I thought that I could not do what I had never tried. But here, volunteers never think us handicapped and help us to do lots of things."

"For one week, I have never felt that I am disabled. I have never felt like this before. This week is the best week in my life."

I am really happy to be here.

Avsa Kampi (10-19th July)

We went to the Avşa which is an island in the Marmara Sea. There was a camp for disabled people. Since the director of the camp wanted it to be like Alternative Camp and we did not have any groups in Izmir for a week, we decided to help them.

Avşa Kampı site was completely different from Afacan Motel where Alternative Camp Izmir has been held. In the Avşa, all of us, including the disabled, stayed in tents and almost half of a day, water supply had been cut off. The biggest difference was that there were lots of disco around the camp. In Izmir, there is no disco but in camp. This made disabled people go out of the camp and enjoy night lives.

At Alternative Camp, we wake up early in the morning and play morning sports and eat breakfast all together. But in Avşa Kampı, we could not do that. We tried to make them sleep earlier but we could not. We went to this camp after the group. They had already got used to enjoy night in the Avşa. We could not change them in a week. I think the reason was because they came to the camp as a holiday, not as a camp like Alternative Camp, so they brought their families.

Like this, everything was different Alternative Camp. I think it's impossible to make the camp like Alternative Camp because of environment and atomosphere. Avşa Kampı should be Avşa Kampı. They can use ideas of Alternative Camp, but cannot be Alternative Camp. They should search their own way and step to that way.

Everything has strong points.
